Character Conception and Production History[]

Amelia derives from Captain Alexander Smollet of Robert Louis Stevensons' novel Treasure Island. During script writing for Treasure Planet the ending of Amelia and Doppler having children together was devised along with some details on the species. It was determined in this stage that Doppler and Amelia are a male and female of their species with the females resembling cats and the males resembling dogs as a nod to the battle of the sexes. However a mild twist was intended where upon the men where in the species seen as the 'weaker sex'. Something that was derived to based on how among Lions it's the women who hunt. The species was also planned to have a reproductive system akin to that Seahorses where men carried the young. The original ending would have included a pregnant Dr. Doppler however this was deemed too confusing for the intended audience and replaced with their babies being present at the festivities. This lead to, for better or worse, the development team of Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon presenting Doppler and Amelia as different species- the Canids and Felids.
