Angela Cross is a female Lombax native to the Bogan Galaxy who first appears in the 2003 game Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. She's perceived as a masked thief whose identity is kept secret as she worked to, unknown to Ratchet and Clank at the time, save the galaxy from MegaCorp's Protopet. She utilizes the use of hired mercenaries (perceived by Ratchet and Clank to be Thugs), theft of corporate property, and torture (in the case of the robot Clank) to achieve this goal before a literal misstep (off the roof of her personal spacecraft) causes her mask to fall off revealing what she is at which point she attempts to reason with the (presumably younger) Ratchet. Once Ratchet does realize what's going on the two end up working together though with Angela using less harsh methods to maintain the alliance. Due to this she can be considered a false antagonist. Angela's reveal as a Lombax briefly caused a stir in the fandom as it wasn't very clear that she was one. She was taller then Ratchet, had the same fur pattern, but also lacked a tail. The lacking of tail having been a fault of the graphics designers who forgot to add it to the game. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Clank in Time referenced such confusion through a radio broadcast talking about the disappearance of Angela Cross.
Background[]
Angela Cross grew up in the Bogan Galaxy and became an employee of Megacorp - the megacorporation that governs the Bogan Galaxy. There she worked in the bio-genetics division. Before Quark took over the company she had been tasked by Mr. Fizzwidget with curing the Protopet of it's violent tendencies (the creature having eaten its handlers). Angela created a device called a Helix-o-morph (which would alter the dna helix of the Protopet) in order to accomplish this. But before she could finalize her creation Quark, disguised as Mr. Fizzwidget, pushed the release date of the protopet forward. To Angela this was evidence that her employer didn't care about the danger the Protopet posed and thus she left the company with a sizable bonus package for her service. With those funds she bought a house on planet Grelbin and feeling like the only person who could save people from the Protopet created a robotic army, hired some mercenaries, and constructed a tactical suit to carry out operations aimed at stopping Megacorp from unleashing the Protopet menace.
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando (2003)[]
Angela Cross is first seen with two hired thugs entering a MegaCorp facility on a swamp planet. There she demands and receives something from a clerk through intimidation. As she turns to leave the Merc she hired throws the short clerk into a button that deactivates the facility's barrier defense which has been keeping the local wildlife out of the compound. An alarm sounds and she leaves to focus on her personal mission. In doing so she allows a lot of innocent employees of MegaCorp to eventually be eaten by the wildlife before Ratchet and Clank arrive at the facility. Latter after learning that MegaCorp has hired those two to stop her she abducts Clank and tortures him to get Ratchet to hand over information she desires. During a face to face confrontation she falls on her face causing her mask to fall off and attempts to reason with Ratchet and Clank who agree to help her only after being shown evidence of the Protopet's threat. Her plan had hinged on using her Helix-o-Morph to turn the protopets into harmless beings, a device that before they can use it Captain Quark does which only turns the protopets into more hostile creatures. When asked if the device ever even worked Angela informs Ratchet that it use to but something must be wrong with it. After the Protopet is defeated Clank informs her that the battery was in backwards. Angela along with a newly freed Mr. Fizzwidget set about the task of pacifying the Protopet and trying to recover from the disaster it's release has been.
Character Quotes[]
- "You have no idea what you are involved in. Return to your own Galaxy immediately... or this will happen to you." Angela Cross in her masked disguise accidentally presses a red rather then a green button, she turns seeing that she missed "... or this will happen to you." Angela presses the green button sending a shock to the table bound Clank she has captured. She turns to the camera recording this warning to Ratchet. "Farewell."
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal[]
Ratchet and Clank are still in the Bogan Galaxy at the start of the game, specifically where they where at the end of Going Commando but end up leaving without talking to Angela about why or where. Angela doesn't appear in the game until the end where she attends the Secret Agent Clank holo-film premier in her 'thief disguise'.
Ratchet and Clank Future Saga[]
Tools of Destruction[]
Angela is not mentioned but the main antagonist, Emperor Percival Tachyon of the Cragmites- claims that Ratchet is the last Lombax in the universe which suggests that he has dealt with Angela Cross in the Bogan Galaxy.
A Crack in Time[]
Angela Cross's disappearance is mentioned in a radio broadcast with the two newspersons briefly debating weather or not she is a Lombax. In such one news caster reminds another that many species have radical anatomical differences between male and female and states that female Lombax's don't have a tail. However, the start of the game establishes that Ratchet is the only Lombax in the Universe (repeating what was stated in Tools of Destruction). Which only furthers the confusion though Captain Quark isn't convinced, when told that Ratchet is the only Lombax he finds that odd- Angela having played a part in foiling his plans in the Bogan Galaxy.
Ratchet and Clank Comic Series[]
The Comic 'Ratchet and Clank issue 5 Multiple Organisms' mentions her as having escaped Tachyon's hunt with the help of Max Apogee though the Dimensionator.
No-Tail?[]
The lack of a tail was an error by the graphical engineers working on Going Commando and following the fandom's confusion the developers of the game came forward to clarify that Angela is a Lombax. The introduction of Rivet, a female Lombax around the same height as Rachet and possessing a tail again stirred confusion among the fanbase though the developers have remained adamant that Angela is a Lombax. There is no official explanation for Rivet's anatomical difference from the only other seen female in the games (being shorter and having a tail). This has left the fan base to speculate with one suggestion being that Angela Cross has giantism, a genetic abnormality, and perhaps lost her tail in a work related incident while in service to Megacorp.
