The 1990s decade of Star Trek was marked significantly by the death of franchise founder Gene Roddenberry on the twenty first day of October during the year 1991. The lose of his guidance so early in the decade lead to the 1990s having a characterization of the narrative's setting that was darker than material published prior with Deep Space Nine being the primary example. The Borg where introduced during the early days of the post Gene era of the franchise.
