Superhero fiction is a genre that focuses on the actions of one or more superheroes; individuals who usually possess superhuman abilities relative to a normal person, and are dedicated to protecting the public. Such individuals usually have alternate identities (some, are only known by their 'hero' identity), and often don costumes to conceal who they really are. Typically such fiction draws upon the genres of Action, Fantasy, and Science Fiction. Superman as introduced in the year 1938 is considered the genesis of the genre with some historians choosing to label alike works to the genre prior to 1938 as Proto-Superhero Fiction. Such Proto-Superhero Fiction is chiefly characterized by the Masked Avenger character archetype as opposed to the Caped Crusader archetype.
