Generic means "related to or descriptive of an entire group or class; to lack specificity". A fictional character is a made up person or person like entity. Generic fictional characters are designated by a broad label rather than a personal name such as "Stormtrooper", "Drifter", "Patron", "Islander", or "Mechanic". They represent the concept of a person as defined solely by affiliation, occupation, ethnicity, or other collective identity as opposed to an individualistic personal identity.
