This is a category for works of the Science Fiction genre whose narratives are set in, what at it's point of release would be, a future that is worse than the present in which it was published. Science Fiction explores technological advances, social and environmental changes. These works of the genre explore such with Negative Futurism (Technological Pessimism, Social Pessimism, etc). The term Dystopia is some times used though such use is at times avoided as one person's vision of a Dystopia is undoubtedly another person's impression of Utopia - especially when it comes to matters of ideological preference and view of human nature. The indicator of a work depicting a negative future is the protagonist being hindered and suppressed by the technological, social, and environmental changes of the future. Where as works depicting a positive future have the protagonist aided and supported by the technological, social, and environmental changes of the future. Generally in works depicting a negative future problems facing society come from internal rather then external sources. With at times an organization, entity, or place outside of society providing a release from the hindrance and repression of society.
