A commentary are types of videos where users individually or as a group, critique videos.
History[]
First generation[]
The first gens were started on TV.
Second and third gens[]
It is unknown what the second and third gens are, although it is assumed they are either on YouTube before 2007 or so.
Fourth Gen[]
These are the earlier commentators. They often use clips in videos such as Nostalgia Critic clips and some others. Some YouTubers use the term "Fourth Gen Commentator" to describe YouTubers who still use trends from the Fourth gen (such as S1 Ep1 for commentaries).
Fifth Gen[]
Fifth Gen commentators are commentators that are after 2010. They don't use trends (or not as much) from the fourth Gen. As of now, most fifth gen commentators retired from making commentaries and have either left YouTube, or are making game reviews or gaming videos. The fifth gen has been criticized by some for bandwagoning, skipping (espically when skipping points the one being commentated on makes that invalidates the commentators point, most notably called out by the BlackBusterCritic with Youngbloodfantasy91) And having a bias with some.
Sixth Gen[]
There are 3 types of Commentaries in the sixth gen, old Commentaries (commentaries like in the older gens), Political Commentaries (YouTubers who do it for satire, like Undoomed, The Amazing Athiest, Thunderf00t, and Sargon of Akkad.) and New Commentators (Like LeafyIsHere, Pyrocynical, NFKRZ, and Herotic to name a few).
Old Commentaries[]
Old Commentaries or old style commentaries are commentaries that are very much like the older gens. Except that most modern commentaries, aren't usually as popular as the older gens, and don't usually feature some of the problems of the older gens as much.
Political Commentaries[]
Political Commentaries are mainly videos that mainly debunk videos that usually say things that either don't make sense or are considered very dumb. Videos that mainly get debunked under this are Buzzfeed videos, feminist videos, videos about political events, speeches and so on. Political commentaries have been around since around or before the fifth gen of commentaries.
New Commentaries[]
New Commentaries, also known as "roasting videos", are videos that are like the gens of commentaries, except they are more satire based and usually aren't as serious as older commentaries. Leafy is known for being the founder of this genre and he has often gotten backlash for being a "bully", and "harsh". Other people that have been a part of this genre include Pyrocynical, NFRKZ, Herotic, Sinn0h, Elvis the Alien, BionicPIG, and some others.
