Deep is an animated feature film published in 2017.
Plot[]
Two generations ago Humanity plunged the world into catastrophe. During the great flooding of the world Kraken, a great octopodal creature saved many inhabitants of the Earth's oceans and set aside a place for them to live.
Deep, Kraken's grandson, is finding life at the refuge boring, and makes life more interesting through forbidden ventures to the world out side the colony where he shows a fascination with Human artifacts. One day Alice (his shrimp friend), and Evo (a Lantern Fish) are lured outside by Deep who wants to share his wonderful discoveries with them. When what he thought was just a fun ride ends in a blast (the object was a torpedo) the resulting explosion ends up trapping the community beneath fallen stone and lava flow. His grandfather, who has ruled as King, rallies the citizens of the colony to try to lift the stone blocking the exit but they can not. He informs Deep that only Nathan, a white whale and the Krakan's old friend, has the strength to move the stone.
Deep, Evo, and Alice set out to find Nathan and after passing through the Wall of Doom they arrive at a sunken ship (the Titanic) where they becomes the guests of the Vampire Squid Norma. Norma use to be an Aquarium animal who admired the attention she was receiving from Humans but after the world flooded she found herself wondering alone in the ocean and then found the Titanic to make her luxurious home. However she laments that none come to see her shows. Closing the three into the theater area she has them listen to a performance of hers (a song mostly consisting of her feelings regarding the current state of the world). Deep devises some chosen words to get her to tell them where to find the City of Man where Nathan was last seen by the Kraken. She tells them ecstatically that they'll need to go to Broadway to find Nathan and how to do so. With this information they start to leave. Norma attempts to keep them from leaving turning violent in her actions only to eventually demand they leave in frustration and the with a path opened by her actions they depart while Norma realizing she'll be alone again calls out desperately for them to come back. Her desperation turning to anger and a 'I don't need them' attitude as she goes back to entertaining the skeletons on board the sunken ship.
Shortly after departing the three are attacked by Maura, a great Moray Eel in search of food at the Steel Mountain. The three friends do what they can to survive the attack which ends when Deep mentions that he has friends and Maura realizes the three are traveling together. She admits that she's never actually had any friends and is rather lonely. She asks if Deep would allow her to travel with them, and insists that she will not 100% eat them and can protect them from (other) predators to which Alice and Evo insist Deep refuse- but Deep accepts. That night the three get to know each other a bit more, and go to sleep. Maura wakes up choking to find that she ate them in her sleep but they are still alive and with great difficulty after initial panic regurgitates her friends. This is enough for Alice and Evo to feel somewhat vindicated but Deep insists they chalk it up to experience- everyone still being alive.
Upon reaching the Brooklyn Bridge the group is surrounded by a multitude of Crabs whose leader, Rico, intends to kill the intruders. Deep quickly entices them to spare them to hear the story of their journey and signals out Alice as being able to tell it really well. Rico insists they tell him the story or die. After trying to tell jokes instead Rico insists they partake in a dance for his entertainment if they are to be allowed to pass. Alice faces off against Rico in a dance battle and the two find they fancy one another and the party is permitted to enter. Rico warns them to stay away from a smiley face. They find former New York to be a radiation filled hazard zone where they face a horde of mutant fish near the smiley face Rico warned them of..
The group becomes increasingly lost and begin to experience disagreements regarding the direction they should take and eventually Deep starts to experience the most blame for the current situation. The group becomes so lost as to travel to what was formerly Greenland where they are met by the Penguin Darcy, Walrus Luigi, and Dolphin Ralph. Alice, Evo, and Deep are shown a video about the 'Ark' project. During the Catastrophe Humanity built three Ark Ships which where to settle a new planet. Ark-1 for Humans, Ark-2 for ground animals, and Ark-3 for Aquatic life. Only Arks 1 and 2 launched before the great flood reached the site of Ark 3, which has not launched yet. After the three watch this their host Darcy takes Maura aside and tells her that they plan to launch the third ship but will need to freeze the group and they ask her help in deceiving them to this end as they are aware that the three others are on a mission they may see as more vital then the larger picture- that they'll fail to see the importance of the launch to the survival of them all.
Maura agrees and leads them into a trap to freeze them, when brought there Alice, Evo, and Deep find Nathan the white whale chained. Escaping the cell before it can freeze Deep joins Maura in battle against Darcy, Luigi, and Ralph as Maura found herself betrayed by them. In the resulting battle while Ark-3 is blasting off everyone gets ejected as the now empty Ark-3 proceeds towards the planet where Humanity awaits.
Returning home with Nathan, Alice, Evo, and Maura the efforts begin at freeing the community from the rubble with Deep nearly being killed in the process. Maura proposes an idea where in it'll be possible for her to start fertilizing to increase the population through a global migration where eggs would be deposited across the seafloor, while Deep (believing himself to be the last of his kind) finds love thanks to the release of another like him from cryo. As for Darcy, Luigi, and Ralph- well they are stranded on an ice sheet near Greenland crying out for their mothers believing such to be what Humans would do in their situation.
