Doctor Richard Daystrom (portrayed by William Marshall) was known in the Federation as the foremost computer expert and engineer who designed the Duotronic Computer in 2243. Duotronic computers are built into all Constitution class vessels and many others in Star Fleet. His accomplishment earned him the Noble and Zee-Magnees Prizes. In 2268 Doctor Richard Daystrom created the 'Multitronic Computer' and with it the first true A.I. in the Federation- his creation was the M-5; capable of operating a starship independent from input by a crew. He hoped this invention would lead to an era where mankind no longer perished in the void of space, he believed that such a machine would save millions of lives that would otherwise be lost in conflicts across the universe. However the M-5 testing proved flawed when the M-5 failed to comprehend the difference between a 'wargame' and actual combat. Daystrom in what can only be called a fit of temporary insanity did his utmost to protect his machine- denying it's flaws- even while lives where put in risk. His actions lead to him being sent to a mental rehabilitation facility in that year of 2268. [1] Doctor Daystrom's achievements are still honored across the galaxy and interest in A.I. bolstered. Accounts regarding the incident have been published for study; of interesting note is that the M-5 was convinced to stop upon realizing that it's actions violated the laws of Man and God [1].
