Erika was written in the 1930s. It is thought that it was written in "1930", however this wasn't confirmed. The song was successful before World War II. The song was published in 1938 by Louis Oertel. Niel, who joined the National Socialist German Worker's Party in 1933 and became a leading Kapellmeister. The song came into usage in the Wehrmacht, most notably, the Heer and Kriegsmarine.
