Fallout 76 is an MMO produced by Bethesda. It's set earlier then any other installment in the Fallout franchise in still largely idyllic West Virginia.
Production[]
Concept[]
The concept for a Fallout MMO goes all the way back to Brian Fargo, President of Interplay (Fallout's original production company) who proposed such. Feargus Urquhart was opposed to it for costs reasons- Interplay would have to have hired more staff to serve as administrators on the servers and felt that Interplay was in no position to take on such a project. Interplay passed the idea on to a subsidiary named 'Engaged' which gave it the name 'Project V13' and contacted Micro Forte for development of the project before cancelling it.
Bethesda, now having the rights to Fallout, has decided to use the franchise as a way to get into the MMO market.

The Announcement
Lore Fiasco[]
In October of 2018 it was revealed to the fanbase that the Brotherhood of Steel, Super Mutants, and Children of Atom would feature in the game. While staples of Fallout since Fallout 3 (which introduced the Children of Atom simply as a local cult isolated in Megaton before Fallout 4 expanded them into a wide spread religion) the three are by established canon unable to feature in West Virginia in the year the game takes place. Where this online game, like Elder Scrolls Online, to be a none canonical installation such would not be an issue however as Bethesda plans this to be a prequel telling a story regarding the Brotherhood's origin (despite such being stated in Fallout 2) and that of the other three factions- it's become an issue for those invested in the lore. It'd effectively retcon much of Fallout 2 and in doing so much of Fallout 3 which utilizes Fallout 2 elements for it's plot.
