Template:InfoboxKim Jong- (mentally) il (February 16, 1941 – December 17, 2011) was the evil Supreme Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk; commonly called North Korea) from 1994 to 2011. He succeeded his father and founder of the DPRK Kim Il-sung, following his death in 1994. Jong-il was the General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Chairman of the National Defence Commission of North Korea, and the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, the fourth-largest standing army in the world.
Jong-il's third son Kim Jong-un was promoted to a senior position in the ruling Workers' Party and succeeded Jong-il, following his death. At the Fourth Conference of the Worker's Party of Korea and the Fifth Session of the Twelfth Supreme People's Assembly, Jong-il was proclaimed the Eternal General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Eternal Chairman of the National Defence Commission in 2012. His birthday is a public holiday in the country.
