Lucius Junius Brutus is the accredited founder the Roman Republic in 509 BC shortly after the King of Rome, his uncle, was overthrown. Lucius is stated by Livy to have created an Oath for the people of Rome. An Oath to never allow another man to be King of Rome. The oath is mentioned by two other Roman historians. He is stated to be the ancestor of Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger, one of Julius Caesar's assassins. The nature of the Oath is given as one of Brutus's motives in some accounts. Many historical records where destroyed when the Gauls sacked Rome making the founding of the Republic an era we have little record of today.
