Michael Burnham is a fictional Star Fleet officer and Captain in the CBS Star Trek: Discovery series. She's been portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green, Arista Arhin, and Kyrie McAlpin. She made her first appearance in the episode "The Vulcan Hello" which aired on the 24th day of the month of September during the year 2017.
Character Conception[]
The name of Michael for the character was proposed by Aaron Harberts to Bryan Fuller. At the time their where various names on the table at a producer/writer session and Aaron Harberts proposed Michael as Bryan Fuller had a tendency to give female characters masculine names (such as Chuck and Jaye). Aaron Harberts had come up with the name due to recalling Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed and The Bangles bass player Michael Steele. Bryan was unsure at first but after considering the other names on the table chose to adopt Michael for this character's name.
