Nintendo GameCube or the GCN is a sixth generation home game console released by Nintendo EAD in 2001. The GameCube is a console which is shaped like a cube. The console is the first Nintendo console to use Optical Discs. The second is the Wii and the third is the Wii U.

About it

The GameCube was announced and unveiled in 2000. The console, along with Sony's and Microsoft's PlayStation 2 and Xbox caused controversy before they were even released, as their awaiting success put Sega in debt, forcing them to discontinue their Dreamcast.

The console was released in 2001. It became very successful, grossing 22 million units and selling more than ten million games. It became a famous console, selling many games, like Super Mario Sunshine and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. As a way of competing with its rival consoles, Nintendo lowered the console's original price of $199 to only $100, making it cheaper than the PlayStation 2's price of $399 and the Xbox's price of $299.

In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii, and the early versions of the Wii was backwards-compatible with the Gamecube. One of the last games released on the console is Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which was also released with the Wii.

The console was discontinued in 2008, but still can be sold in retail shops.

A purple cube bounces on the screen, and rotates across the screen to create a cubic trail, before bouncing into the center of the trail to make the Gamecube logo.

Easter eggs

The console's startup and main menu has three Easter eggs hidden it.

  • If the Z button on the controller is pressed when the player turns the console on, the usual startup sound will be replaced by squeaking and xylophone music and laughter.
  • If the Z button is pressed on all four controllers, the startup theme will be replaced by kabuki-music and bongos, followed by vocals.
  • If the GameCube's main menu music is sped up 16 times, the music is the start-up music of the Famicom Disk System. This Easter egg went undiscovered until 2009, one year after the console got discontinued.

  • The best-selling game for the GameCube is Super Smash Bros Melee at 10 million copies.
  • The console's version of SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Game won the Best Game Award in 2006.
  • This console was replaced by the Wii and the Wii is backwards compatible to the Gamecube.
  • However in the newest versions of Wii, it eliminated backward compatibility with Gamecube.
  • The console sold 22 million units, making it the second lowest-selling sixth generation home console behind the Dreamcast and the second-lowest selling Nintendo console, behind the Wii U.
