Robert Lindsay Rogers was a Canadian soldier during the first World World War. His image has become mistakenly purported to be that of a shell-shocked soldier who lost his mind during the war.

Robert Lindsay Rogers was from Yarmouth, Novia Scotia and enlisted in the 40th Battalion and was moved to the 25th Battalion during the first world war. On the sixteenth of September in the year 1916 while talking to his sergeant a sniper shot through his neck and the bullet killed his sergeant. The now widely circulating image of him smiling was taken when medics arrived to treat his injury and the injuries of others in the trench. He had to wait until nightfall to be evacuated for further treatment. He would return to service and during a charge upon enemy trenches be killed in action during the year 1917.
