Squidville

Squidville is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season two. In this episode, Squidward moves to Tentacle Acres.

Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick get their new reef blowers and start blowing and sucking things up with them, eventually sucking up Squidward's windows and door. When Squidward demands them to give the windows and door back, they shoot them at Squidward's house, destroying it. Squidward tells SpongeBob and Patrick that "This is the final straw. I am going to move so far away that I will be able to brag about it. I would rather tear out my brain stem, carry it to the middle of the nearest four-way intersection, and skip rope

with it than go on living where I do now." Just then, his TV falls beside him amidst the rubble of his house, playing an commercial for "Tentacle Acres", a private community created exclusively for octopuses and ironically the guy advertiseing says the exact same thing's Squidward said only as question's. Squidward moves there, where he finds that the residents all look and act similar to him, even living in houses identical to his, much to his delight, not even eyeing a rock or pineapple in sight. Before Squid can go to sleep, eager to start his new life afresh, SpongeBob and Patrick call Squidward in an attempt to get him to return home, but Squidward knows what they're planning and can even see through their gibberish talking, and he therefore abruptly hangs up on them after saying that there was no possible way he was returning home, being among his own kind.

Squidward begins his first day at Tentacle Acres by going biking, and finds that all the other squids are riding their bikes as well. He then goes grocery shopping, and is impressed by the local food market, which even carries "canned bread". He then sees a Interpretive Dance Academy, where he dances in a group with others who share his style of dancing. At the end of the day, he sees a clarinet-playing trio performing in the park, which he joins. On Squid's second day at Tentacle Acres, he rinses-lathers-and-repeats the process he did on the first day around. However, as the days succeed another, Squidward keeps performing the same routine from morning (starting from bike riding, to canned bread purchases, to the dance academy lessons, to the clarinet trio) to night. Again and again, Squidward keeps repeating the same process, and because there's nothing new about it, the smile he once had starts to lose its shape and Squid starts to get to used to doing what he does every day. As the days continue, Squidward is starting to look horribly bored with his ideal life and eventually, that boredom leads to depression. Finally, Squidward realizes one day, while playing with the trio, that his dream life wasn't everything he had hoped it to be, and Squidward stops playing before he finishes. Squidward felt much worse off than he did when he left SpongeBob and Patrick.

While sitting on a park bench, lamenting this, Squidward hears a reef blower, hoping SpongeBob is there, but is crushed when Squid finds out that was not to be (it seems that at this point, Squidward was hoping to see someone not of his species, even if it had to be the person he hated). The squid then leaves the reef blower unattended , with a sign that said "Back Whenever", and Squidward starts playing with it (in the same manner that SpongeBob and Patrick did in the beginning of the episode), irritating and scaring his neighbors out of their wits in the process. They eventually become fed up with his behavior, and form an angry mob and chase him as they are now on the warpath against Squidward. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick come to Tentacle Acres to apologize to Squidward in hopes that he will move back as their neighbor. The surveillance guards tell them that their kind isn't welcome here and refuse to open the gate for them. However, Patrick's bad breath travels through the intercom into the room where the guards are, knocking them out and causing them to fall over onto the button that opens the gate. They enter the village, and see Squidward cornered by the angry mob, who show him "A well thought out and organized list of complaints" and are demanding him to leave and Squidward agrees. Spongebob and Patrick are unable to identify him among the crowd of near-identical squids, with SpongeBob saying that "Any one of these Squidwards could be the real Squidward!". Squidward then uses the reef blower to launch himself out of the village, and SpongeBob says "Well, we know one thing: it sure isn't that guy!"

Trivia

• This is the ninth episode to feature flowers in the title card.
• The title card for this episode is similar to those of "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" and "Karate Choppers," except there are flowers added in.
• On the back of the SpongeBob DVD "Tide And Seek", this episode is listed as "Squidsville".
• Based on the montage which shows Squidward doing the same things every day and gradually becoming tired of it, Squidward spent a total of fourteen days, two weeks, or one fortnight at Tentacle Acres.
• Two of the residents that have minor speaking roles voices's are identical to that of Squilliam Fancyson.
• Canned bread actually exists as a Japanese product called "Pan Desuyo!" ("This is a bread!") (and in other countries). It is a real product in the US too; though in modern days, it is not as popular as it was to previous generations (The joke is that Squidward is old/boring.)
• This is the second episode to feature a reef blower, the first being "Reef Blower".
• This's the first time a main character moves from Bikini Bottom to another place, the second was Gary inHave You Seen This Snail?, the third being Pest of the West (At the begining, Spongebuck Squarepants moves to Dead Eye Gulch), and the fourth/last was SpongeBob in What Ever Happened To SpongeBob?
• The part where Squidward was watching the commercial and Patrick changed it became a popular phenomenon on YouTube called "Patrick hates *random show*" This is where a random show is placed onto the TV that Squidward was watching and Patrick changes it saying "I hate this channel" and the video ends. An example of the show that is placed on the TV is the scene from the "Rugrats" episode "Angelica Breaks Her Leg", where Stu is making chocolate pudding for Angelica at 4:00 a.m., another YouTube phenomenon.
• This is the first time that show squids all around the place.
• The guard asking about sponges and starfish may be inspired by the events of Opposite Day: Spongebob and Patrick ruined Squidward's chance to sell his home by driving the realtor crazy with their antics. The realtor very likely might have shared her horror story, thus making everyone wary about living next door to sponges and/or starfish.
• Irony: When Squidward plays with the reef blower, the people repeat his exact responses to Spongebob and Patrick when they played with reef blowers.
• On the popular website "Tv tropes', 2 pictures from this episode are shown on the page "Boredom Montage". Both of which are from the same part.
• Tentacle Acres again appeared in PC version of Lights, Camera, Pants!
• When Squidward is at the dancing academy, you can see a squid there that looks like Squilliam since he has a unibrow
• As it was made apparant that Squidward hadn't left Tentacle Acres or seen Spongebob since he moved in, it could be presumed that Squidward quit his job at the Krusty Krab. It was never made clear however, how he could afford to live there and buy food with no source of income, unless he had money saved up.

Goofs

• Squidward parks his bike in front of the "Full of Health" store, but when he exits the store, it is gone.
• SpongeBob and Patrick sucked in four pieces of Squidward's house, but when they shoot them back out, six pieces are shown flying through the air.
• At first day at the Tentacle Acres when Squidward joins the clarinet trio, when the camera zooms out, Squidward's shirt becomes white for a moment.
• From a certain angle, there are no numbers on the doors of Squidward's neighbors. From other angles, there are numbers on the doors.
• When Squidward is at the IDA, note the person next to him with a unibrow. It changes from orange to yellow. Then during the montage orange is the colour. All of the squids are the same in many ways. they all have a nasaly laugh and play the clarinet. However, in "Cephalopod Lodge", they are many different shapes, colors, and sizes.
• When Squidward went into the dance center two squids over there was one that looked like him except no headband.
• After Squidward says, "Yeah! It's even better in a group!" and before he says, "This town is perfect.", a bubble transition is shown. For a brief second you can see "Rough Draft Korea" at the bottom of the screen. This error was done by the animation crew in Korea, where they color the episode.
