Trelane Star Trek TOS the original series The Squire of Gothos

Trelane was encountered by the Enterprise's crew in 2267 when he abducted them. Trelane had developed a vast fascination with Humanity based on what he was able to observe from the planet Gothos. Due to the distance between Gothos and Earth Trelane had been observing the 18th and early 19th centuries. He had trouble understanding that Humanity had progressed socially past that era of swashbuckling, imperialism, and slavery- an era he looked on as a period of high adventure. Trelane was intent on keeping the crew to explore Humanity first hand and after Kirk destroyed the machine keeping the Enterprise at Gothos Trelane moved the entire planet to pursue them. Kirk was put on trial by Trelane for treason against a Superior Authority and eventually devised a ploy to allow his crew to escape. Allowing himself to be hunted (taking inspiration from 'The Most Dangerous Game') in exchange for the Enterprise's departure. Once Trelane had Kirk cornered Kirk broke Trelane's sword and slapped him twice. This caught the attention of Trelane's parents who first addressed Trelane, sending him 'to his room' as punishment for bullying a lesser species. Trelane pouted as he faded into 'his room'. They then addressed Kirk asking that he forgive their son. Trelane it turned out was a mere child by his species standards and his parents where still trying to curb his spoiled nature of which they have remorse.

Notes[]

  • Trelane is similiar to Q, a character appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation and for a time this lead fans to speculate that Trelane was a Q or infact Q himself. However as details regarding Q emerged it became apparent that while Trelane was incorporeal and had powers like Q he was not a Q. Trelane requires machinery to do certain things Q can do without such and it's apparent that Trelane's culture is different then that of the Q Continuum as evident by the use of personal names rather then all being Q.
