Valentina Tereshkova (born March 6, 1937) is a retired soviet cosmonaut, and engineer who is acredited as the first woman to fly in space. Prior to joining the Cosmonaut Corps, Valentina had been honorably discharged from the Soviet Air Force. Thus becoming the first civilian to fly in space.
