Xbox is a sixth generation home game console made by Microsoft in 2001.

About it[]

Microsoft had been trying to make game consoles for a while, but due to money limitations, they could not have the chance to create the console. The console was announced in 1999, and was named Xbox in 2000. It was officially released in October 2001.

The console had a bulky controller which was too big for little children to use so Microsoft released a shorter controller for shorter grip.

Microsoft heavily advertised the console as being more technologically advanced than other consoles which they showed through the design of the console and through the browser menu of the console, with advertisements suggesting the console is a piece of alien technology. The console also had many features that were later popularised by other consoles such as an online paid subscription service called Xbox Live, the ability to connect to the Internet in order to use Xbox Live as well as sharper defined graphics when compared to rival consoles, the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube.

While the console enjoyed wide success in the Western world, it wasn’t entirely successful in Japan which is a leading market in the video game industry with Japanese gamers favoring the PS2, and younger Japanese gamers favoring the GameCube. This lack of success in Japan contributed to sales of the Xbox stagnating, selling only 25 million units. Microsoft eventually discontinued the console in 2007, with its replacement, the Xbox 360 released in 2005.

Startup[]

A pulsating green blob forms in the centre of the screen while being suspended by two rotating green mechanisms. The blob then rushes to the screen to form the Xbox logo.
